Zechariah 13
Zechariah 13 develops around the themes of restoration, purification, and the salvation of the remnant.
This chapter begins with the opening of a fountain of purity for Israel, turning back to God—an allusion to the promise of salvation mentioned in the previous chapter 12. At the same time, it addresses the process of purification from false prophecy and disobedience, as well as the meaningful cleansing of the remnant.
1verse“In that day there will be a fountain opened to David’s house and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, for sin and for uncleanness.
2verseIt will come to pass in that day, says the LORD of Armies, that I will cut off the names of the idols out of the land, and they will be remembered no more. I will also cause the prophets and the spirit of impurity to pass out of the land.
3verseIt will happen that when anyone still prophesies, then his father and his mother who bore him will tell him, ‘You must die, because you speak lies in the LORD’s name;’ and his father and his mother who bore him will stab him when he prophesies.
4verseIt will happen in that day that the prophets will each be ashamed of his vision when he prophesies; they won’t wear a hairy mantle to deceive,
5versebut he will say, ‘I am no prophet, I am a tiller of the ground; for I have been made a bondservant from my youth.’
6verseOne will say to him, ‘What are these wounds between your arms?’ Then he will answer, ‘Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.’
7verse“Awake, sword, against my shepherd, and against the man who is close to me,” says the LORD of Armies. “Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered; and I will turn my hand against the little ones.
8verseIt shall happen that in all the land,” says the LORD, “two parts in it will be cut off and die; but the third will be left in it.
9verseI will bring the third part into the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will test them like gold is tested. They will call on my name, and I will hear them. I will say, ‘It is my people;’ and they will say, ‘The LORD is my God.’”
Structure and Key Content
- Verses 1-2: The opening of a fountain that washes away sin and impurity for the house of David and the residents of Jerusalem, along with the promise that idols and false prophets will be cut off.
- Verses 3-6: They depict that false prophets are judged and no longer operate. This is a process for true spiritual restoration.
- Verses 7-9: The shepherd (leader) is struck and the sheep scatter, yet in the midst of it, the remnant is refined like pure gold and called by God. The purification of the remnant and the restoration of a true relationship with God are emphasized.
Message and Meaning
Zechariah 13 shows that true restoration is possible only after the past sins and wrongdoing are cleansed and false faith is removed. The cleansing fountain symbolizes God’s grace and forgiveness, and the refining process of the remnant is deeply connected to renewal of faith within the community. In the end, it conveys a message of hope that God refines and remakes His people.

- Let me make a decision to live today by putting aside lies and self-deception, and by relying deeply on God, who is the true truth.
