Song Of Solomon 4
Isaiah 4 is the climax of the messages about judgment and salvation among chapters 1 through 5 of Isaiah. Overall, it consists of six short verses, emphasizing the "remnant" left behind after judgment, their restoration, and God’s protection and presence.
1verseBehold, you are beautiful, my love. Behold, you are beautiful. Your eyes are like doves behind your veil. Your hair is as a flock of goats, that descend from Mount Gilead.
2verseYour teeth are like a newly shorn flock, which have come up from the washing, where every one of them has twins. None is bereaved among them.
3verseYour lips are like scarlet thread. Your mouth is lovely. Your temples are like a piece of a pomegranate behind your veil.
4verseYour neck is like David’s tower built for an armory, on which a thousand shields hang, all the shields of the mighty men.
5verseYour two breasts are like two fawns that are twins of a roe, which feed among the lilies.
6verseUntil the day is cool, and the shadows flee away, I will go to the mountain of myrrh, to the hill of frankincense.
7verseYou are all beautiful, my love. There is no spot in you.
8verseCome with me from Lebanon, my bride, with me from Lebanon. Look from the top of Amana, from the top of Senir and Hermon, from the lions’ dens, from the mountains of the leopards.
9verseYou have ravished my heart, my sister, my bride. You have ravished my heart with one of your eyes, with one chain of your neck.
10verseHow beautiful is your love, my sister, my bride! How much better is your love than wine, the fragrance of your perfumes than all kinds of spices!
11verseYour lips, my bride, drip like the honeycomb. Honey and milk are under your tongue. The smell of your garments is like the smell of Lebanon.
12verseMy sister, my bride, is a locked up garden; a locked up spring, a sealed fountain.
13verseYour shoots are an orchard of pomegranates, with precious fruits, henna with spikenard plants,
14versespikenard and saffron, calamus and cinnamon, with every kind of incense tree; myrrh and aloes, with all the best spices,
15versea fountain of gardens, a well of living waters, flowing streams from Lebanon.
16verseAwake, north wind, and come, you south! Blow on my garden, that its spices may flow out. Let my beloved come into his garden, and taste his precious fruits.
Summary of the Main Content of the Text
- Verse 1: It shows the desperate reality in which women, because of disasters after judgment, want to rely on a single man, symbolizing the social collapse and sorrow of Israel.
- Verses 2–3: Through Israel, purified after suffering, it highlights the "shoot of the LORD" (God’s life-giving power) and the "remnant." This means that those who survive judgment will have true holiness.
- Verses 4–6: God will purify the remnant, and promises His presence and guidance with clouds and a pillar of fire. This symbolizes God’s protection in the wilderness during the Exodus—imagery that signifies peace and safety for both the community and individuals.
The Overall Meaning of Isaiah Chapter 4
Amid the heavy message of disaster and judgment, Isaiah 4 proclaims God’s hope and restoration through the newly surviving "remnant." Although there is collapse and pain caused by human sin, even so God still cares for His people and gives them a new life. Emphasis is placed on the purification and protection that come to everyone who turns to God, and on God’s eternal presence.
Points for Reflection
- What form does God’s judgment and restoration in my life take?
- Even amid difficulty and confusion, how do I understand my identity as the "remnant" God has left behind?
- As I look back on whether I experience God’s presence and protection in my daily life, let me take a posture of seeking God’s will again.
Applying It to Myself
- Remembering God’s promise of restoration that comes after suffering, I too can look to God and hope even in my difficulties.
- I can think about which parts of my life need to be purified, and I can pray, hoping for a new life within God’s presence.
