Psalms 142
Psalm 142 is a psalm written by David. In a time of despair, he earnestly asks God for help and pours out his heart. The psalm includes the background explanation, “When David was in the cave,” which reflects his feelings during the time when he was hunted by King Saul and lived as a fugitive. Psalm 142 contains a personal plea and trust; it does not merely stop at voicing his pain, but looks forward to God’s guidance and deliverance.

3verseWhen my spirit was overwhelmed within me, you knew my route. On the path in which I walk, they have hidden a snare for me.
4verseLook on my right, and see; for there is no one who is concerned for me. Refuge has fled from me. No one cares for my soul.
5verseI cried to you, LORD. I said, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.”
6verseListen to my cry, for I am in desperate need. Deliver me from my persecutors, for they are too strong for me.
7verseBring my soul out of prison, that I may give thanks to your name. The righteous will surround me, for you will be good to me.
Structure and Flow
- Verses 1-2: The psalmist cries out loudly, bringing all his suffering and troubles before God.
- Verses 3-4: He confesses that his strength has failed and expresses his loneliness and despair, since no one helps him. Yet he shows his belief that God knows his way.
- Verses 5-6: He confirms that God is his refuge and asks to be rescued from his humiliation and suffering.
- Verse 7: Finally, the psalmist hopes that God will lead him out of his troubles and that a day will come when he will praise God together with the righteous, because of this.
The Overall Message
Psalm 142 reveals a complete loneliness and pain, and the closeness with God found within it. The psalmist acknowledges the reality that there is no one he can rely on humanly, but right there he tells God everything about his situation without holding anything back. The more desperate the circumstances are, the more the psalmist relies on God, and finds trust and hope in God amid suffering. This can be said to be the central message of this psalm.

- Do I honestly confess the deepest thoughts of my heart to God?
- In the midst of difficulty, do I trust in God’s guidance and look for deliverance?
Applying It to Me
As I reflect on Psalm 142, I can also look back on whether I am able to bring my weakness in suffering to God without hiding it. In addition, while trusting that God is my refuge, even when it seems frustrating and there is no hope, I can apply to my life the idea of filling that very place with prayer. Let us live each day with the belief that when we confess honestly without hiding our hearts, we will experience closeness with God and a new hope.
