Hebrews 2

Passage overview

James chapter 2 is divided broadly into two parts. First, in verses 1–13, it deals with the theme of not showing favoritism toward people. In verses 14–26, it discusses the issue of faith that does not result in deeds. Overall, James emphasizes the practical application of faith—how faith should be revealed in daily life.

1verseTherefore we ought to pay greater attention to the things that were heard, lest perhaps we drift away.

2verseFor if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just penalty,

3versehow will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation—which at the first having been spoken through the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard,

4verseGod also testifying with them, both by signs and wonders, by various works of power, and by gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to his own will?

5verseFor he didn’t subject the world to come, of which we speak, to angels.

6verseBut one has somewhere testified, saying, “What is man, that you think of him? Or the son of man, that you care for him?

7verseYou made him a little lower than the angels. You crowned him with glory and honor.

8verseYou have put all things in subjection under his feet.” For in that he subjected all things to him, he left nothing that is not subject to him. But now we don’t yet see all things subjected to him.

9verseBut we see him who has been made a little lower than the angels, Jesus, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that by the grace of God he should taste of death for everyone.

10verseFor it became him, for whom are all things and through whom are all things, in bringing many children to glory, to make the author of their salvation perfect through sufferings.

11verseFor both he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified are all from one, for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brothers,

12versesaying, “I will declare your name to my brothers. Among the congregation I will sing your praise.”

13verseAgain, “I will put my trust in him.” Again, “Behold, here I am with the children whom God has given me.”

14verseSince then the children have shared in flesh and blood, he also himself in the same way partook of the same, that through death he might bring to nothing him who had the power of death, that is, the devil,

15verseand might deliver all of them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

16verseFor most certainly, he doesn’t give help to angels, but he gives help to the offspring of Abraham.

17verseTherefore he was obligated in all things to be made like his brothers, that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make atonement for the sins of the people.

18verseFor in that he himself has suffered being tempted, he is able to help those who are tempted.

Verses 1–13: The Practice of Discrimination and Love

James says that discrimination based on status, appearance, wealth, and such should not exist within the faith community. For example, it points out the difference in attitudes toward the rich and the poor, and explains that before God everyone is equal. It then recalls the commandment to love one’s neighbor and emphasizes the importance of mercy, judgment, and the so-called royal law.

Verses 14–26: The Relationship Between Faith and Deeds

In this section, James says that faith is not genuine if it is not shown through specific deeds. It points out that faith that exists only in thoughts or words is dead faith, and through the examples of Abraham and Rahab, it explains that faith must be demonstrated through real actions. In this way, it emphasizes that faith and deeds cannot be separated.

Meditation Points

  • Think about whether you are discriminating against the people around you based on their appearance or status.
  • Reflect on whether your faith is leading to the practical practice of love and to concrete actions.

Try Applying It to Yourself

  • When you deal with your neighbor, you can apply to your life an attitude of practicing sincere concern and care, as well as love without discrimination.
  • Check and apply it to yourself so that your faith does not remain only in words, but can be revealed in your real actions and choices.
