Genesis 22

Passage overview

Genesis 22 begins with God testing Abraham. God tells Abraham to offer as a burnt offering Isaac, his son, whom he had obtained after a long wait, and Abraham obeys by heading to the land of Moriah. At the moment he is about to present Isaac as the offering, God stops Abraham’s hand and has him offer a ram instead. Next, God renews His blessing on Abraham’s faith and His promise regarding his descendants.

1verseAfter these things, God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” He said, “Here I am.”

2verseHe said, “Now take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go into the land of Moriah. Offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains which I will tell you of.”

3verseAbraham rose early in the morning, and saddled his donkey; and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son. He split the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went to the place of which God had told him.

4verseOn the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place far off.

5verseAbraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey. The boy and I will go over there. We will worship, and come back to you.”

6verseAbraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. He took in his hand the fire and the knife. They both went together.

7verseIsaac spoke to Abraham his father, and said, “My father?” He said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “Here is the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?”

8verseAbraham said, “God will provide himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So they both went together.

9verseThey came to the place which God had told him of. Abraham built the altar there, and laid the wood in order, bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar, on the wood.

10verseAbraham stretched out his hand, and took the knife to kill his son.

11verseThe LORD’s angel called to him out of the sky, and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” He said, “Here I am.”

12verseHe said, “Don’t lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him. For now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.”

13verseAbraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and saw that behind him was a ram caught in the thicket by his horns. Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering instead of his son.

14verseAbraham called the name of that place “The LORD Will Provide”. As it is said to this day, “On the LORD’s mountain, it will be provided.”

15verseThe LORD’s angel called to Abraham a second time out of the sky,

16verseand said, “‘I have sworn by myself,’ says the LORD, ‘because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son,

17versethat I will bless you greatly, and I will multiply your offspring greatly like the stars of the heavens, and like the sand which is on the seashore. Your offspring will possess the gate of his enemies.

18verseAll the nations of the earth will be blessed by your offspring, because you have obeyed my voice.’”

19verseSo Abraham returned to his young men, and they rose up and went together to Beersheba. Abraham lived at Beersheba.

20verseAfter these things, Abraham was told, “Behold, Milcah, she also has borne children to your brother Nahor:

21verseUz his firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel the father of Aram,

22verseChesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel.”

23verseBethuel became the father of Rebekah. These eight Milcah bore to Nahor, Abraham’s brother.

24verseHis concubine, whose name was Reumah, also bore Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah.

Structure and Development

  • God’s command (verses 1–2): Abraham is given the command to offer his son Isaac as a sacrifice.
  • Abraham’s obedience (verses 3–10): Abraham prepares immediately and goes to Mount Moriah with his son Isaac.
  • God’s intervention (verses 11–14): Just before Isaac is about to be killed, God stops Abraham and has the ram offered as a substitute burnt offering instead.
  • Reaffirmation of the covenant (verses 15–19): God confirms again the blessing and the promise regarding Abraham’s obedience.
  • The descendants of Nahor (verses 20–24): After the episode concludes, the genealogy of Abraham’s brother Nahor’s descendants appears.

Key Meaning and Message

This chapter shows Abraham’s faith and obedience, and how God’s faithfulness is revealed in real life. God required Abraham’s most precious possession, yet at the same time He would not allow a human sacrifice to the end, and instead provided a substitute offering along the way—so you can also glimpse God’s guidance and love. Through this event, you can deeply reflect on the relationship of trust between God and human beings, and the meaning of obedience carried out within the framework of God’s promises.

Reflection Points

  • What is the most precious thing in my life, and can I offer that as well before God?
  • In difficult circumstances, can I trust God’s promises and follow Him?
  • Have you ever experienced finding in your everyday life the grace of “substitution” prepared by God (Jehovah Jireh)?

Personal Application

Through Genesis 22, think about the moments of challenge and obedience that I face. You can consider what God may be asking of me, and how that request is leading me in my faith. Apply trust and obedience, along with God’s provision, concretely to the situations of everyday life.
