2 Peter 2
First John 2 can be divided into four main parts. First, it gives counsel about sin and the intercessor (verses 1-2). Second, it discusses God’s commandments and the practice of love (verses 3-11). Third, it warns about loving the world (verses 12-17). Fourth, it offers counsel about the antichrist, the anointing, and dwelling in the truth (verses 18-29). This chapter contains a message about the identity and practice of believers, and a warning against the incorrect teachings spreading in the church at that time.
1verseBut false prophets also arose among the people, as false teachers will also be among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, denying even the Master who bought them, bringing on themselves swift destruction.
2verseMany will follow their immoral ways, and as a result, the way of the truth will be maligned.
3verseIn covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words: whose sentence now from of old doesn’t linger, and their destruction will not slumber.
4verseFor if God didn’t spare angels when they sinned, but cast them down to Tartarus, and committed them to pits of darkness to be reserved for judgment;
5verseand didn’t spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah with seven others, a preacher of righteousness, when he brought a flood on the world of the ungodly,
6verseand turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction, having made them an example to those who would live in an ungodly way,
7verseand delivered righteous Lot, who was very distressed by the lustful life of the wicked
8verse(for that righteous man dwelling among them was tormented in his righteous soul from day to day with seeing and hearing lawless deeds),
9versethen the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptation and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment,
10versebut chiefly those who walk after the flesh in the lust of defilement and despise authority. Daring, self-willed, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignitaries,
11versewhereas angels, though greater in might and power, don’t bring a slanderous judgment against them before the Lord.
12verseBut these, as unreasoning creatures, born natural animals to be taken and destroyed, speaking evil in matters about which they are ignorant, will in their destroying surely be destroyed,
13versereceiving the wages of unrighteousness; people who count it pleasure to revel in the daytime, spots and defects, reveling in their deceit while they feast with you;
14versehaving eyes full of adultery, and who can’t cease from sin, enticing unsettled souls, having a heart trained in greed, accursed children!
15verseForsaking the right way, they went astray, having followed the way of Balaam the son of Beor, who loved the wages of wrongdoing;
16versebut he was rebuked for his own disobedience. A speechless donkey spoke with a man’s voice and stopped the madness of the prophet.
17verseThese are wells without water, clouds driven by a storm, for whom the blackness of darkness has been reserved forever.
18verseFor, uttering great swelling words of emptiness, they entice in the lusts of the flesh, by licentiousness, those who are indeed escaping from those who live in error;
19versepromising them liberty, while they themselves are bondservants of corruption; for a man is brought into bondage by whoever overcomes him.
20verseFor if, after they have escaped the defilement of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in it and overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first.
21verseFor it would be better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than after knowing it, to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them.
22verseBut it has happened to them according to the true proverb, “The dog turns to his own vomit again,” and “the sow that has washed to wallowing in the mire.”
Verses 1-2: Sin and the Intercessor
John emphasizes to believers that they should not sin, but comforts them by saying that if they do sin, Jesus Christ is there as the advocate (intercessor). Jesus also explains that he is the atoning sacrifice for our sins—offering himself not only for our sins, but for the sins of the whole world.
Verses 3-11: Commandments, Light and Darkness, and the Practice of Love
Those who claim to know God must keep his commandments, and especially love their brothers, which demonstrates that they remain in God’s light. It also emphasizes that those who do not love but instead hate still live in darkness, helping them realize that the essence of faith ultimately is the practice of love.
Verses 12-17: A Warning Against Loving the World
John addresses his readers as “little children,” “fathers,” and “young men,” offering comfort and encouragement for their different spiritual stages. He then urges them not to love the world, teaching that the cravings of the world and its boasting will not last forever—only those who do the will of God will remain forever.
Verses 18-29: The Antichrist, the Anointing, and Dwelling in the Truth
Along with the warning that many antichrists will appear in the last days, it emphasizes that true believers have received God’s anointing and therefore came to know the truth. This anointing can be seen through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and through it, they are encouraged to live in the truth by following true teaching. It also reminds them that the one who practices righteousness is righteous.
Meditation Points
- True fellowship with God is revealed in the practice of obeying his commandments (especially the commandment to love).
- You can reflect on how the values of the world differ from the values of God’s kingdom.
- Think about why it is important to discern the truth correctly and to protect yourself from false teaching.
Try Applying It to Yourself
- Check yourself to see whether you truly love God and are living a life that loves your neighbor.
- If there is worldly desire, laziness, or hatred in your heart, you need the courage to let them go.
- To keep a faith that does not waver within the truth, make a small commitment you can put into practice today.
